Start to formulate a set of strategies and initial plans to work out how to grow the idea into an end product
Checking if its really viable and definitely wanted.
The baseline strategy is rudimentary at this stage
(it will quickly evolve in the next steps of your journey)
You need an initial set of goals and tactics
Rome wasn't built in a day ....
Ideas and visions that materialise can become reality in a day and these will be within your expertise to productise and deliver.
Most business (and even personal) projects can take days, week and even months to come to fruition and need help planning
A clear set of high level raodmaps, depending on level of the organisation and team or organisational function you are in should be available as a way of signposting direction of travel
New product or services ideas need quality time and resources to be developed
There will be many factors to consider, impact on your processes, technology, production, distribution, your organisation, people and talent ("As Is" - "To Be" Target Operating Model)
As part of the strategy development and project needs to be established, with a clear owner with overall accountabiliy
This is about gathering information and proof points that will be used to build your strategy
Provide supporting evidence why this particular idea or concept should be invested in further
What is the likely target market. Who are the likely competitors. What is the potential £size of market available. What % of that market can you serve, We will use bottom up and top down estimation methods
It is possible and even very likely you already have a strategy. In which case we help by being an independent (highly confidential) critical best friend for you to validate and re-affirm the strategy has all the key components covered off, is realistic in its goals and has achievable timescales.
If you feel your strategy needs more refinement, or don't even have a strategy, then we will help you identify and fill in the missing gaps, or even help you produce an initial strategy from scratch
We will use a range of tools and techniques (market segmentation, market research, basic forecast modelling etc). Whilst these might be familiar concepts, even used regularly, quite often these basic disciplines are overlooked. It is important to have a basic business plan and product strategy
You and your teams will need to take an active part in the process by owning actions and activities (not just by participating), before, during and after developing your Strategy and Vision. This will create a sense of buy-in to the plan
Who is responsible for "The Strategy"?
A common held view is "strategy - that's for the management to sort out". Incorrect, in our view. It should be a joint effort involving different stakehoders across the business
If a high level business strategy exists, then different teams (product, sales, marketing, finance etc), need to take responsibility to develop their own teams product strategy, marketing strategy, finance strategy etc., using the high level business strategy as input
If a high level business strategy does not exist, then (as above) different functional teams STILL need to take responsibility to develop their own team's strategy and raise to management to check, validate use as an input to develop the higher level strategy
Top down AND bottom up approach has a place to play, in our view
Strategic Levels Alignment
All lower layers of the organisation and their teams should ensure their strategy aligns and underpins the higher level strategy. Ultimately, individual employees' own personal objectives and KPIs set should align to team, functional and management plans
